Why Flexibility Is Your Best Friend When Moving to Spain

By Jessica Baker

When planning a move to Spain, most people dive into checklists, spreadsheets, and carefully thought-out timelines—and that’s fantastic, we do it too! Having a plan gives you direction, keeps you organised, and helps reduce the overwhelm that often comes with an international move. It also gives you a sense of control around what you can control.

But here’s something we’ve learned from working with families, retirees, and remote workers making the leap to move to Spain: your ability to go with the flow when the plan changes is absolutely priceless.

Because in Spain, things move differently. Paperwork may take longer than expected. Offices might close early for siesta. Appointments can be rescheduled without much notice. And just when you think everything is sorted, a curveball (or two) might come your way.

That’s not usually a failure in planning—it’s part of the process.

Embracing this slower, more flexible rhythm is a big part of adjusting to life here. Learning to live in the present, and only stressing about what you can control will ultimately make your transition smoother and more enjoyable.

And as we like to say, “Live in the present—because the other tenses are harder to learn!”

So while we absolutely encourage you to plan ahead for your move—whether it’s finding the right school, getting your NIE, or understanding the healthcare system—don’t forget to build in some breathing room. Spain will teach you patience, flexibility, and how to say “no pasa nada”.

And that’s the beauty of starting a new chapter here.
